About the Author
Nicole Wilde is a Certified Pet Dog Trainer (CPDT), a professional member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) and a popular speaker at the organization’s national conferences. She is on the Advisory Board for Cynology College. Nicole is an internationally recognized author. Her books include Living with Wolfdogs, Wolfdogs A-Z, So You Want to be a Dog Trainer, It’s Not the Dogs, It’s the People! and One on One: A Dog Trainer’s Guide to Private Training. She writes training and behavior articles for various newspapers and magazines including Modern Dog Magazine. Nicole co-stars in the DVD “Train Your Dog: The Positive Gentle Method,” and appears in the Paul Owens DVD "The Dog Whisperer: Compassionate, Non-Violent Dog Training." Nicole teaches seminars for professional and aspiring dog trainers both domestically and internationally.

Realistic advice, helpful information, great resources

Nicole Wilde has generously shared her advice for those who have considered becoming dog trainers. The book doesn't just gloss over general information, but gives enough detail to help you know if it's really what you want to do, and to get you started on the right path if you do decide to go ahead. She covers the business aspect of dog training as well as what it's like to deal with the dogs and their people. Most importantly, she includes information about the kinds of things dog trainers are expected to handle that most people haven't even thought of - it's not just teaching someone's dog to "sit," "stay," and "shake." She provides resources for education so that you know what you need to learn and where to find that education. Nicole Wilde books are some of the most useful books about dogs that I've ever read. Her style is easy to read and warm, as well. If you are even considering being a dog trainer in your wildest dreams, read this book first.

The BEST book I've read on becoming a dog trainer

When I decided to become a dog trainer, I had so many questions. Do I need to be certified? What type of school should I go too? Where can I connect with other trainers? What books should I read? What methods should I avoid? How should I market myself? And most importantly - WHERE DO I START?!
This book was helpful in answering all of these questions plus more. It also gave advice and suggestions for things I hadn't even thought of yet. It also has a lengthy resource section which has been extremely helpful for me and other newbie trainers.
If you're looking to get into the business, this is an excellent place to get your start. The information contained here are invaluable and will get you on your feet - just like it did for me! I highly recommend it to anyone who's considering a career as a dog trainer.

A Must Read!!!

I purchased this book a while ago, when I read it the first time I thought it was good. Then I read it again after I gained more knowledge as a trainer and became more interested in wanting to pursue a dog training business and I found it to be GREAT. The author goes above and beyond to help those of us who want to be trainers and start a business. It is not a book to teach you to train dogs, however, there are a lot of resources and information on that as well. I live in an area where trainers are so afraid of competition that they are not willing to help you with any form of guidance. The author shares some of her experiences, what worked for her, what didn't work, and gives you guidance on what to expect in the "real world" as well as what organizations to contact to get even more information. I hope this helps :-)
