Birth of Mass Politics in Egypt

This is a solid work of scholarship, and serves a nice supplement to Mitchell's more expanded work. However, given that the new information handled by B. Lia offers merely a refinement of our understanding of the Brotherhood rather than a radical revision, one is recommended to rather begin with Mitchell-whose book is available in paperback, is more established, and is a fraction of the cost. Contrary to D. Pipes' and others' reviews, Mitchell's work does not portray the Muslim Brotherhood as reactionary. This rhetorical device of point, counter-point does considerable injustice to Mitchell's work.
Standing on its own, this work is well written and easy to follow. Lia is able to delve into the mechanics of the organization on a social and political level in order to reveal just how it reached the amount heights of success that it did. The result is a picture that explains well why it was a model so extensively copied and exported throughout the Muslim world. If there is any comparison to be made to Mitchell's work, this would certainly be the proper feature to focus on. Overall, Lia gives a much more lucid, detailed account of the Muslim Brother as a social organization and makes a convincing case for the organization being the first grass-roots political movement in Egypt with its origins and leadership from the poorer classes [unlike the Wafd]. What is lost, however, is comprehensive picture of the whole-and this due partly to the limited time frame of the study-wherein the Brotherhood's other distinguishing features [e.g., its religiosity, transformation during political persecution, etc.] are obfuscated.

"The best known study of Egypt's foremost fundamentalist Islamic movement, Richard Mitchell's Society of the Muslim Brothers (1969) portrayed the organisation as a reactionary response to Westernization mounted by those left in its wake ... Now, however, a thoroughly different (and much improved) interpretation rules, one that sees the Muslim Brothers and like movements as a facet of modernization. Their personell are urbanites dealing with the cutting edge of modern problems; their ideas, methods, and goals all incorporate modern ways; and they show far more willingness to learn from the West than was hitherto realized.
In a very impressive research effort into the early years of the Muslim Brothers, Lia (a Norwegian scholar) relies on new sources and deep knowledge of his subject to show convincingly just how well that movement does fit the new interpretation. He establishes that it organized in ways novel for Egypt and mobilized elements of the population hitherto neglected. But its greatest importance lay in developing an answer to the rampant European ideologies of the 1930s: in this, the Muslim Brothers began "a lasting process of renewal .. in which religion was related to the modern age and all aspects of modern life." With justification, Lia concludes that the Muslim Brothers' reinterpretation of Islam will remain 'the most far-reaching Islamic renewal this century' ".

"Lia's book provides a fresh reassessment of the growth of the Muslim Brothers. He does so by drawing on a wealth of recently discovered documents, including the Society's own internal publications from the 1930s and '40s, British intelligence reports and al-Banna's personal letters.
While touching on issues of ideology and anti imperialism, Lia places great emphasis on the Society's structure and its activities within Egypt to explain its early phenomenal growth. Rather than a reaction to modernity, he argues that the Society itself was a modern organization, open to new technologies and ideas. (..)
The violence and radicalism within the organization prove to be among the thorniest issues in the book. While the Muslim Brothers provided the organizational model for today's radical Islamic groups, to some extent they also provided the template of violence. Lia argues that the Society, while calling for an all-Islamic "struggle" on various occasions, was not inherently violent. The Muslim Brothers did have a military wing, the so-called Special Section, but this, he says, was a way to channel the radical energies of the more energetic younger members. This element of violence can be traced back to a split within the Muslim Brothers in 1939. As a reaction to al-Banna's accommodationist political activity, a group calling itself the Society of Our Master Muhammad's Youth split off from the main organization. Throughout the next decades, this group would continue to splinter, creating the network of violent Islamic groups which plagued Egypt today (..) Lia argues that the growing radicalism resulted from government efforts to shut these Islamic groups out of the Egyptian political system. Lacking a legitimate outlet for their energies, he argues, these groups can easily turn to the option of terrorism.
"The Society of the Muslim Brothers in Egypt 1928-1942" is an important contribution to our understanding. If any complaint can be leveled it is at the circumscription of the book's time frame. Lia limits his study from the beginning of the Society until 1942 (..)Numerous issues of interst arose in the Society's history after this period from the involvement of the Muslim Brothers in the 1948 war against Israel to the 1949 assassination of al-Banna and Nasser's eventual outlawing of the Society. A wider study would further consider the development of violence within the Muslim Brothers and its splinter groups and offshots. One can only hope that Lia has plans for a companion volume"

Maureen Orey is an award-winning international speaker and best-selling author with more than 25 years of experience in management, leadership, training, and career development. This is a must have in any trainers tool box regardless of your experience level

I expected this book to be amazing and it exceeded those expectations by far! Having been a trainer in the Academia arena for many years (and taught communication skills on a college level), I was interested to see what the author was going to bring to the table that was new and fresh. The book started out with a great first ten pages on "How To Use The Book" which made so much sense. This is not just a book that you sit down, read, and then put on the book shelf. In my first read through, I had tons of highlights, dog-eared pages, and bookmarks placed throughout. The author provides a great refresher on why communication is so important within a training setting; something we often forget. Then the book takes you from pre-workshop, workshop, and post-workshop, providing information on training that takes a few hours to multi-day sessions. This book encompasses everything you need from slide info, handouts, room configuration, and so much more. WORTH EVERY PENNY!

I am a big fan of the ATD Workshop Series, and when I saw that Maureen Orey, a Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP), was updating Communication Skills training, I knew I had to have this book. Quoting from the cover, “Includes All the Activities, Handouts, Tools, and Assessments You Need to Create and Deliver Powerful, Effective Training”. From an hour session to a multi-day workshop this book covers it all. I have used parts of this book in several other classes I have designed to stress the importance of communication and tie these classes back to a central message for my clients. Maureen has a succinctly captured the essence of communication skills and put it together in a way that any talent development professional can go from zero to classroom in a matter of days with highly professional presentations and materials. Finally, what you see is not all you get. In addition to the book, it is supported by a web site that contains all the PowerPoint presentations, handouts, and assessments. There is no need to create anything from scratch, or reinvent the wheel if you have this outstanding book.

About the Author
Paul M. Pedersen, PhD, is the Director of the Sport Management Doctoral Program at Indiana University (IU) in Bloomington, Indiana, USA. He is a Professor of Sport Management at IU. Pedersen - inducted as a North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM) Research Fellow in 2009 - has published seven books and over 75 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He has also been a part of over 100 invited or refereed presentations around the world. In addition to his other authorship activities, Pedersen is the founding editor of the International Journal of Sport Communication. He is also an editorial board member of 10 journals, including positions of founding editorial review board member of Communication & Sport and two other journals.

Kimberly S. Miloch, PhD, is an associate professor and coordinator of sport management at Texas Woman's University. In 2002 Miloch earned her PhD in sport management from Florida State University. Before entering academia, Miloch was the public relations and game operations director for a minor league hockey team. She also worked in communications and marketing for the United States Tennis Association Texas Section. Miloch is a member of the Sport Marketing Association and an editorial review board member for Sport Marketing Quarterly, Journal of Legal Aspects of Sport, and International Journal of Sport Management.

Pamela C. Laucella, PhD, is the academic director of the National Sports Journalism Center at Indiana University in Indianapolis. She is an assistant professor, specializing in sport journalism and sport history. She earned her PhD in 2004 in journalism and mass communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was also a recipient of the Park Fellowship. Laucella has presented at numerous professional conferences in several disciplines and has published in peer-reviewed national and international journals.

About the Author
Oi-Ming Lai is a Professor in Enzyme Technology from the Department of Bioprocess Technology, Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia. She obtained her Ph.D. in Biotechnology from Universiti Putra Malaysia in 1999. She is the coeditor of Healthful Lipids (AOCS Press), the author or co-author of more than 100 referenced SCI publications, more than 8 book chapters and the holder of 8 patents. She has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in enzyme technology, food biotechnology, industrial biotechnology, and food biocatalysis. Oi-Ming’s research program includes the development and improvement of structured lipids, upscaling and bioreactor design and kinetics, and product diversification of various oilseed components and its by-products. She has won numerous professional awards including the WIPO’s Best Invention by Woman Award in 2008 in Brussels, Belgium. She also sits on the Editorial Board of the Food and Bioprocess Technology Journal published by Springer USA.

Chin-Ping Tan is an associate professor in the Department of Food Technology, Faculty of Food Science and Technology, Universiti Putra Malaysia. He obtained his B.Sc. in Food Science and Technology and Ph.D. in Food Processing from Universiti Putra Malaysia in 1998 and 2001, respectively. From 2002 to 2004, he served as a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow at National Food Research Institute, Japan. He has a strong interest in physicochemical properties and changes in quality of palm oil products. His current research interests center on lipid science and technology, food nanotechnology, food emulsion, food processing, flavor sciences, and thermal analysis. He has published 5 book chapters, over 120 refereed papers in international refereed journals and presented more than 130 papers in various national and international conferences. In June 2011, he was appointed Visiting Professor at King Saud University, Riyadh, where he is involved in the research related to extraction and modification of plant oil from underutilized oilseeds. To date, he has received more than 40 research awards by various national and international bodies. Most recently, he was awarded the ProSPER.Net-Scopus Young Researcher Award 2010, TWAS Young Affiliate Fellow (2010-2014) and Universiti Putra Malaysia’s Excellent Researcher in Science and Technology in 2011.

Casimir C. Akoh received the Ph.D. degree (1988) in food science from Washington State University, Pullman. He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Biochemistry from Washington State University and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, respectively. He is a Distinguished Research Professor of Food Science and Technology and an Adjunct Professor of Foods and Nutrition at The University of Georgia, Athens. He is the coeditor of the book Carbohydrates as Fat Substitutes (Marcel Dekker, Inc.), coeditor of Healthful Lipids (AOCS Press), editor of Handbook of Functional Lipids (CRC Press), the author or coauthor of over 210 referenced SCI publications, and the holder of three U.S. patents. He is an ISI Highly Cited Researcher in Agricultural Science. Springer Publisher listed his paper as the top 5 most cited articles in 2008/2009 in the J. Am. Oil Chem. Soc. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Food Technologists (2005), American Oil Chemists’ Society (2006), and the American Chemical Society (2006). He serves on the editorial boards of six journals and is a member of the Institute of Food Technologists, the American Oil Chemists’ Society, and the American Chemical Society. He has received numerous international professional awards for his work on lipids including 1998 IFT Samuel Cate Prescott Award, 2003 D. W. Brooks Award, 2004 AOCS Stephen S. Chang Award, 2008 IFT Stephen S. Chang Award, 2008 IFT Research and Development Award, 2009 AOCS Biotechnology Division Lifetime Achievement Award, and 2012 Supelco/Nicholas Pelick-AOCS Research Award. His research interest is on improving human health through healthful lipids produced by enzymatic reactions.
