She sees London, she sees France, she sees . . . Jamaica

Cat Royal just can’t get a break.
She’s had to be a spy, a ballerina, a boy, and a captive, and now, in “Black Heart of Jamaica”, she’s returned to her one true love: the theater. After joining a traveling theater company bound for the Caribbean with her musical friend Pedro, Cat gets to explore the beautiful- and dangerous- world of Jamaica and, as always, meets tons of new friends. She also has a run-in with an old frenemy. Billy Shepherd now owns a plantation and is up to no good- or has he turned over a new leaf? But when Pedro, a former slave himself, hears about the slave revolts in San Domingo and runs away to help, Cat’s attempts to find him only land her in a worse pickle: captured by an old enemy she thought she was finished with for good!
Cat, as always, is funny, quick-witted, and independent. The book is set in the 1790s, but Cat is pleasantly and refreshingly ahead of the times. She’s also starting to think just a little bit more about her future- which most of us have been thinking about for a while, I’m sure! I also enjoyed Billy’s growth in this book. There may be hope for him as a person after all. Other beloved characters like Frank and Syd don’t make much of an appearance, unfortunately, but there’s still another book and I hope for the best! She’s always a good time, that Cat Royal.
*If any of the above confused you, I’d just like to point out that “Black Heart” is the fifth in the Cat Royal series, so if you haven’t read the first four, go do that first. The adventures in each book may pretty much stand alone, but to really understand the nuances of the characters’ relationships, I recommend starting from the beginning. One of my favorite parts of this installment was Cat and Billy’s grudging friendship, something I wouldn’t have understood if I hadn’t seen Billy try to kill Cat numerous times!
