An uneven mix of topics, but ultimately interesting

There are few books on the subject of horror from a serious social scientific point of view; that makes this one required reading for any scholar interested in the psychology and anthropology of horror. However, like most anthologies, this one contains a good number of chapters that are clearly "bottom drawer" manuscripts, articles that never made it to publication in a peer-reviewed journal because the data was weak or the work was too speculative. You have to read with a critical eye to separate the wheat from the chaff. But if you do so, there are many nuggets of interesting and useful information.
My greatest overall complaint about the volume is the defintion of "horror," which is very loose, and seems to translate to "exposure to violence or frightening scenes." Most of the studies involve exposing participants to snippets of horror movies or movies with strong violence that might not generally be considered horror (e.g., Jaws). What is missed, then, is that the reaction of a person to a scene or a few scenes of traumatic events is not the same as seeing the full arc of a horror film or violent film. Add to this that, in some cases, a violent scene from a crime thriller or even documentary are considered horror and it is difficult to apply the findings to horror films as they are more commonly construed.
Still, as I said before, there is a dearth of information out there about the social consequences of horror, and there is good work to be found amongst the speculation and off-topic pieces. I would therefore still recommend it to any scholar looking for research on the effects and function of horror in and on society.
