This historical fiction novel follows the story of Guy, a young man coming of age in the 1930s and 1940s. As a birthday present for his thirteenth birthday, Guy's mother takes him to see the great Harry Blackstone Sr.'s 1001 Wonders Magic Show. Guy helps on stage, meets Blackstone, gets a magic set, and decides he wants to become a magician himself. Seeking his destiny, Guy encounters some of the great figures in magic of the era including Blackstone, Lou Tannen and Dai Vernon. He joins a carnival where he has adventures with an oddball assortment of colorful characters. Guy's journey features the Garde Theater and other locations in New London, Connecticut; small towns of the South; the deserts of Africa in WWII; and the theaters, magic stores and night clubs of New York. Along the way, there are guest appearances by Albert Einstein and Ella Fitzgerald. "Magician's Choice" is an exploration of youth and age, fame and betrayal, vengeance and compassion, love and forgiveness. As it transports readers inside the world of performers, the story explores themes of free will and fate. "Magician's Choice" is a tale full of surprises, secrets, and wonder. A story where things and people are not always what they seem to be. With a foreword by Harry Blackstone Sr.'s daughter-in-law Gay Blackstone.
Todd Gipstein has been a writer, photographer and producer for 40 years, 20 of them for the National Geographic Society. He grew up in New London, Connecticut, where parts of the story of Magician's Choice take place. He is an honors graduate of Harvard University, where he studied writing and filmmaking. Todd has traveled the world photographing for documentaries and lecturing. He has always used magic as a way to break the ice with strangers he wants to photograph. He continues to travel, photograph, create media, write, and lecture. Magic has been a lifelong hobby, and he and his wife Marcia have performed shows for National Geographic and others. They collect vintage magic apparatus and posters. Todd likes to perform close-up magic when the opportunity arises. This is his second novel, following Legacy of the Light, a thriller about the hurricane of 1938 and people trapped on the Race Rock lighthouse off the coast of Connecticut.
Todd's writing for media presentations and films has always focused on storytelling. He believes good media should not draw attention to itself, but rather be a doorway to the story. His goal is to transport the readers of his words and the audiences for his shows to other worlds, other places, other times. He hopes that the characters in Magician's Choice will come alive for you, and that the dramas they experience will excite you, entertain you, and make you think about life, fate, and the choices we make or are made for us.

Must read for Magicians (non Magicians too)
By W. Jensen
It is obvious from reading this book that the author has been bitten by the "magic bug" The way he describes Guy, the main character, concerning watching other magicians perform, his needing to buy the next best trick, only to put it in a drawer with the last best New trick, the joy of making a person forget their problems, if only for a moment, and so much more is something only a fellow magician can understand. We are a unique breed!
The story is intertwined with famous and not so famous magicians and celebrities from the past. This only serves to make the story a more interesting read. Being familiar with these people, Dai Vernon in particular, you get the feeling these conversations are real, and then in turn, Guy is real.
Guy's journey through the world of Magic is a varied and interesting one. His time with the carnival and his reaction to the "freaks" is eye opening and heartwarming.
Guy's need for revenge and the ultimate outcome presents much food for thought. Things aren't always what they seem!
My new favorite book!

I loved this book!
By Arklay King
Full disclosure: I've worked with Todd for almost 40 years laboring in the field of AV of one kind or another.
I've always liked his writing. I liked his first book, but I loved this book. The characters really come alive and suck you into the story.
This is a perfect example of 'write about what you know'. Todd has been practicing magic as long as Guy and the whole story just glows because of it.
I didn't want the story to end, and I've already been pestering Todd to bring us more of Guy and his magical world.
Bravo, Toddy. And BION, I am one of his harshest editors.

A truly magical read for magicians & non magicians alike. The same quality writting as Water for elephants' writer gave us.
By William W. Smith
To me, this book is to the art of magic what "Water for elephants" is to the circus arts, & I would LOVE to see a movie of the same quality done from this great novel!! I've been into magic, especially magic history, since the late 1960's. So the names used in this book such as Harry Blackstone, Dai Vernon, etc, are names I know VERY well. Todd used mostly REAL names like this to help tell his story. & as a magician & magic history buff myself, I reverently tip my hat to him for doing such a wonderful job on this. The proof is in the pudding as they say. He was able to get Harry Blackstone Jr's widow, Gay Blackstone, to write the forward. I'm sure she wouldn't have if the book was anything less than brilliant. Todd treated her father in-law, Harry Blackstone Sr., with the high regard & integrity he deserves, being such a force in magic as he & his son Harry Jr. were. I'm going to keep on hoping for a sequel & a movie.
