David Kleinbaum is Professor of Epidemiology at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia. He has provided extensive worldwide short-course training in over 150 short courses on statistical and epidemiological methods. Great for running stat packages, not for understanding what those packages are doing.

My relatively poor review compared to the others has to do with my expectations. My goal was to learn about survival analysis. I have some knowledge of things like multivariate regression, correlation coefficients, and chi squared analysis. I was hoping to learn about more sophisticated techniques.

Instead, the book teaches how to use 3 or 4 computer programs that do these analyses. There is a difference. For example, Chapter 3 talks about the Cox proportional hazards model. It describes, in great detail, the input data and then shows the output given by one of the computer programs that the book uses. In pointing to one of the numbers from the output file, the authors say that it is "approximately a standard normal or Z variable. This Z statistic is known as a Wald Statistic, which is one of two test statistics typically used with ML estimates. The other test statistic, called the likelihood ratio makes use of the log likelihood statistic. The log likelihood statistic is obtained by multiplying the log likelihood in the computer output by -2. " My problem is that the book hasn't defined what a Z statistic is, or how maximum likelihood estimates are determined, and doesn't describe the significance of a log likelihood statistic. All we get is the formula to multiply one of the output values by -2 to get another value. We get no clue what this factor of -2 means.

For me the bottom line is this. The book is very carefully written so that the reader will be able to run several statistical packages and get output files whose numbers can be understood. If that's what you want, this book is perfection itself. However, if you want to understand what those programs are actually doing, you'll need to go elsewhere.

Survival Analysis: A Self-Learning Text

I used this book along with an online course on the same topic by Statistics.com. The book is extremely user friendly, my background being that of a physician with knowledge of basic stats and regression analysis, not a background of mathematics or advanced statistics. Plus having worked out examples in the text using codes covering most of the commonly used stats program made it appropriate for a hands-on learning format that I prefer. Thus, it makes one confident to apply the techniques in future projects involving survival analysis.

Excellent new genre of food.

I found an out-of-print copy, and hope this and other books like it come into print. Mesquite flour and coffee have been on our menu for some time, but here are some great new recipes. It's healthy and it's tasty. If you haven't tried Mesquite Coffee, you don't know what you're missing.

Pocket size selection of basic words & phrases

This is a very nice set, a phrase book and a CD. Both items come in a nice and sturdy case/cover, which is slightly bigger than a CD. It's very portable. I downloaded the CD on to my MP3 player and listen to it while traveling. The book fits in my pocket in case I want to reference it, which makes it very handy on the road.

The product is for travelers to provide them with basic set of words and phrases in Russian. It is not and does not claim to be a tool to teach Russian grammar nor to be a comprehensive resource for Russian phrases. It's pretty basic, covering topics from introductions, travel and transportation, money, lodging, communication to food and shopping to name a few. Besides the phrases the book also includes a brief pronunciation guide and two way dictionary (which is pretty basic). But for under 10 dollars, this is a great value.

I purchased this to help me refresh my Russian vocabulary and get used to hearing the language again. And it's been helpful. I really like the way the CD is done. It first tells you the word or phrase in English and then twice in Russian. The first time in Russian it's pronounced really slooowly and the second time slightly slower than regular speech. The slow pronunciation will be most appreciated by beginners, but I like the fact that it says it in English first and then repeats it twice in Russian. This way you can listen to it without having to follow along in a book. I've purchased other book+CD language sets from other publishers and some of those do not do that. In those cases you turn on the CD and there comes a barrage of foreign words or phrases, one after another. Which means that unless you remember all the words (in which case you'd probably not need to listen to the CD in the first place...), you have to follow along in the book. That does not make it travel-friendly. And since I do some business travel and end up sitting on the plane, I prefer being able to lean back and listen without having to read during a bumpy ride. So this makes the Berlitz series very nice for me. It's a good value and I recommend it.

Excellent supplement to written material

The cd is great to listen to in your vehicle as you drive. You will recognize the written words from your pronunciation practice. The cd chapters can be accessed easily using your "skip" button for easy repetition. There are both male and female voices used on the cd. Some of the phrases are a little intimidating at first listen but there are plenty of words and small phrases that are manageable and very handy for the tourist. The accompanying pocket book is great, too but we didn't feel the need to take it after using the cd. I was very thankful for the Berlitz practice and the patience of the people in Russia:)

Engaging, and so "right" ~

"White Bread" engaged my heart and mind. I looked forward to turning each page. As a storyteller, Christine Sleeter made me care about Jessica, her central character. Sleeter delighted me with the insights Jessica acquired as she met challenges. I was struck by the book's authenticity, my ongoing awareness that Sleeter had walked in the moccasins of her central character.

As Jessica overcame emotional and intellectual challenges of researching the lives of her ancestors to find texture, color, and story, I pictured myself on a similar quest. What fun it would be, like Jessica, to undertake a journey of self-discovery. What if I found that I'm not simply "white bread," another undefined dot in the mass culture? Could I, too, then write rich stories about my ancestors?

As a high school English teacher, Jessica's other challenge was to make literature engaging not only for her white students, but also for her Mexican-American students. I marveled that in relating Jessica's struggle, Sleeter was so right on three counts: Jessica had to develop a relationship with her school's only Mexican-American teacher in order to learn how to excel in meeting this challenge. Jessica had to rely on her own strengths of character to find ways to cope with confrontations with other teachers and white parents who saw no reason for her to incorporate another culture into her teaching. Jessica had to find her own ways to build trust with parents of her Mexican-American students.

As we read, many like myself may be motivated to undertake our own journeys of self-discovery, learning more about ourselves by researching and imagining stories of our ancestors and the context of those stories. We will appreciate that Sleeter has provided us with a road map to guide our quest.

As an outgrowth of researching the lives of her ancestors and developing strategies to reach her Mexican-American students, Jessica experiences more connection between herself and others from different backgrounds. In Jessica, Sleeter has provided a realistic model for these changes. As I read I cheered for Jessica and learned from her. I treasure an author whose characters grow and who nourishes my own growth.

I thoroughly enjoyed Christine Sleeter's first novel White Bread

I thoroughly enjoyed Christine Sleeter's first novel White Bread. This book effectively weaves together two parallel stories, one of the main character Jessica's present day experiences as a new teacher in a bicultural school and the other of her German immingrant ancestors life in America in the 1800's.

I was able to get a good sense of Jessical from the beginning. I could feel her desire to be a good teacher, to know and understand her Latino students and their families. As a former teacher in a bilingul/bicultural school, I, too, had the awareness of the students' desire to
know their own history while at the same time learn about about their new home

Because Jessica is dealing with her own identity and feelings of isolation, she begins to research her German ancestory. This part of the book gave the historical experience of German immigrant in our country. I got to know Jessica's ancestors and their struggles in a new country. This opened up new insights on how different immigrants have been treated here. Jessica's letter to the editor really tied togerther the similarity between the German immigrant's struggles and today's Hispanic immigrants and gave a clear and positive ending to the book.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone who wants a better understading of immigratns and their struggles to become Americans., now and in the past.

Cultural Weaving

Dr. Sleeter has written a novel that all teachers should read and take to heart. Even though I teach high school, the journey Jessica takes applies to educators of all levels. Not only do we need to get to know our students, we need to get to know ourselves, so we can appreciate the cultures of everyone and recognize our potential prejudices. This is a very inspiring work, and I am thrilled that Dr. Sleeter took the time to invest her intellect to bring it to us.

God in Search of Man: A Philosophy of Judaism is among Abraham Joshua Heschel's most comprehensive studies of the Jewish religion. It is a work of impeccable scholarship conveyed with absolute clarity, in a spirit of utmost reverence and compassion. "Religion is an answer to man's ultimate questions," Heschel declares on the book's first page. Religion that forgets its roots in humanity's lived experience, religion that inadequately addresses the earthly realities of life, Heschel says, is false religion. And yet, Heschel asserts that religion is not a vehicle by which humanity draws closer to God; it is always God who reaches out to humanity through religion. "Judaism is God's quest for man. The Bible is a record of God's approach to His people. More statements are found in the Bible about God's love for Israel than about Israel's love for God."

God in Search of Man is almost as exhausting as it is exhaustive. A classic - but as timely as ever

When originally published, this book was seen as a breath of fresh air; it doesn't "analyze" religious thougt. Rather, it forces the reader to examine his own feelings towards G-d.
Heschel, often though of as an academic with a Hasidic background, was rather a Hasidic Rebbe with university training. This work, along with his other popular books (as opposed to the scholarly ones) is written in the form of a series of Hasidic discourses at a comfort level to the reader as if he were sitting with the Rebbe at the Third Sabbath Meal and absorbing his wisdom.
The central theme, the centrality of belief in and devotion to G-d, is often overlooked in contemporary Jewish literature; many veiled (and no so veiled) jibes of contemporary religious practice and life are meant to drive home the point that "it's about G-d and man", not about buildings, organizations or other agendas or programs.
Like the Kotzker Rebbe, Heschel's hero and spiritual father, Rabbi Dr. Heschel was able to cut through the gloss, fluff, and veneer to get to the root of man's belief in and relationship with G-d.

Wonderful Perspective on the Philosophy of God in Judaism

Heschel is by far one of the best writers I have encountered in the area of theistic philosophy. "God in Search of Man" was easy to understand, while still delving into deeper and more philosophical issues. This book will be enjoyed by anyone interested in the philosophy of God or Judaism -- regardless of religious affiliation.
You can see the Chassidism in Heschel; he writes with such an intense love and joy for God. It is a pleasure to share such an experience with him.

Lesley Tsina is comedy writer and actor who has appeared on Community, Black-ish, Funny or Die Presents and was Contributing Editor for cult humor anthology series The Devastator. She is a former technical writer, so her last book was a pile of documentation about cell phone ringtones which the New York Times described as “gripping.” She performs at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre and tours with a one-woman show about being laid off from a tech company, Lord of the Files. She is originally from Palo Alto, CA, and it shows.

If you like oral histories full of strange, rich inside baseball stories, you will love this richly imagined behind the scenes world of Microsoft. It's better than the SNL oral history because this one doesn't have Chevy Chase.

I have learned you are always in for a surprise and giggles with this writing and I was not disappointed. Who knew Computer makings could be so ‘strange’ If you want a giggle this is the one read to dig into. A different read for me but one that definitely held my attention, or whom -did it? / You have to wonder what will readers in the future who get their hands on this book think? Interesting. Book received for a honest review. .

Interesting And Inspirational

Although the title is tricky (or seems like that for the modern readers), the book cries out for justice and for finding a way of concerving the feminine energies - threatened by the harsh American educational system of the nineteenth century.
The study or essay -as it is called by its author - has five parts: Introductory, Chiefly Physiological, Chiefly Clinical, Co-Education and The European Way.
If you are a girl or a woman, this essay will make you understand that your periodical cycle of your cathamenia or female ;"organisation" require some special needs as well as some slightly changes into your daily skedule; or more clearly said: you shouldn't work excessively in certain days of the month or else you could fall ill. In this book you can find many examples of girls and women, who ignored their physiological needs and worked in an manly manner, just to find themelves sick and unable to have children.
Although the study may seem a bit (or more) old-fashioned, because of its style and some of the situations; those who are interested in this subject might find the book interesting, if not inspiring.
I can say that it made me see and perceive a bit differently the period and the little sacrifices that it requires.
