About the Author
David Abraham Adler (born April 10, 1947) is the author of nearly 200 books for children and young adults, most notably the Cam Jansen mystery series, the "Picture Book of..." series, and several acclaimed works about the Holocaust for young readers. Adler was born in New York City, New York. He graduated from Queens College in 1968 with a bachelor's degree in economics and education. For the next nine years, he worked as a mathematics teacher for the New York City Board of Education, while taking classes towards a master's degree in marketing, a degree he was awarded by New York University in 1971. In that same year, a question from his then-three-year-old nephew inspired Adler to write his first story, A Little at a Time, subsequently published by Random House in 1976. Adler's next project, a series of math books, drew on his experience as a math teacher. In 1977, he created his most famous character, Cam Jansen, originally featured in Cam Jansen and the Mystery of the Stolen Diamonds, which was published that year. Adler married psychologist Renee Hamada in 1973, and their first child, Michael, was born in 1977. By that time Adler had taken a break from teaching and, while his wife continued her work, he stayed home, took care of Michael, and began a full-time writing career. Adler has three children and one grandson. He lives in Woodmere, New York.

Robert Casilla was born in Jersey City, New Jersey to parents from Puerto Rico. Like many children, Robert always loved to draw. As the new kid in his second grade class, he recalls doing a drawing of two birds with colored chalk on construction paper. His teacher noticed the drawing and then told the class, "We have an artist in the class!" Robert is thankful to her and all the teachers that motivated and helped him realize he had talent as an artist. Although he grew up in New Jersey, he did get to attend school in Puerto Rico as a fourth grader.

His formal training in art took place at the School of Visual Arts in New York City where he earned a BFA degree.

Since 1984, Robert has worked as a freelance illustrator for magazines, book publishers, postage stamps, educational publishers and others.

He has illustrated over 25 children's books, many of which are picture book biographies of people such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks and John F. Kennedy. He has also illustrated many multicultural children's books such as Jalapeno Bagels, The Little Painter of Sabana Grande, The Legend of Mexicatl and First Day in Grapes which won the Pura Belpr� Honor Award.

Robert visits many schools to talk about the visual journey a story takes him through to come up with the illustrations for his books. He also teaches art to young gifted artist one day a week.

Robert lives and works from his home in New Fairfield, Connecticut with his wife and two children, 3 cats and his feisty shih tzu dog.

Great for special education!

My husband is a special education teacher. He bought this to present to his students. It does a great job at giving special education students access to the content that other students will get from longer stories about the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. It is very easily readable, and it has great illustrations to depict the way Martin Luther King's life was during the time of the civil rights movements. His students really enjoyed the text and illustrations, and the book also provided them with a very convenient timeline of the important dates of the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. My husband and I will be added this book to our daughters' book collection for when they are older.

My daughter loves this book

My five-year-old daughter was fascinated with this book even though it didn't include fairies, animals, or dinosaurs. I was very happy with the information they presented which gives some basic information about Dr. King while not treating his death in such a way that might overly upset sensitive children like mine. The illustrations are wonderfully done and my daughter looked them over carefully for a long time. It is a wonderful opportunity to launch more discussions about racism and the way we treat other people because of their gender, race, or religion.

Excellent first biography

The entire "A picture book of..." biography series byDavid Adler is outstanding. Perfect for lower elementary studentsdoing their first real report. Makes a great read-aloud for non-readers as they are easily completed in one sitting. They are loaded with information including a timeline of important dates. The illustrations in this book are not cartoon-like as in his other biographies of Washington or Lincoln, but are appealing to young children.

The product will remain invisible to the buyer and relatively unknown to the masses. This means businesses must leverage risk by developing something remarkable in order to become visible.

For writers, like me, this is important. What good is a writing that is never noticed and never read? Word of mouth matters, too. I read Purple Cow because another author remarked that it changed his outlook and, in the process, changed his life. I guess what purple cow thinking says is this; what boring is to marketing, conducting business-as-usual is to stale and stagnate–and that, is, well, unremarkable. Why not be remarkable instead?

Must Do, Step 1, for ANY Business

There seem to be two camps reviewing this book. One say that is brilliant and their favorite book of all time. The other says the book is shallow and void of original ideas. Both are right...and wrong.

The main idea of the book is spot on. If your business is not unique, it will be invisible. Marketing an invisible business is tough.

To the critics who say the basic idea is simple and therefore not ground breaking, I agree. But Godin manages to clarify a simple, very important idea that most business owners overlook. There is an elegance to his clarity.

Godin writes books that have a single core idea. He writes in a conversational tone. His books are short and readable. By the way, all of Godin's books make great audio books because they are in his conversational voice.

There are two categories of business books. There are the big serious tomes about how somebody saved ABC Corporation from disaster and made billions in the process. And then there are books for the rest of us. Purple Cow is a "rest of us" book. Years after reading the book, I still struggle with developing my own purple cow. It isn't easy.

Great book but buy the old version!

This is a great book, but don't be fooled thinking you need to purchase the "new edition" with the "bonus chapter". The bonus chapter is just a bunch of people who wrote in about their favorite store/coffeeshop/place to hang out. The stories are poorly written and add no value. Buy the book - but buy the bargain ones without the bonus chapter.

Saving our marriage

I bought this book in combination with Asperger Syndrome and Long-Term Relationships, to try to save my marriage that had fallen apart. This book so far has really Helped! it gives exercises for you to use for commuication with your spouse.We make a date every Sunday we will go to lake , park and take turns reading and discussing.So far this has been a GREAT BOOK! WITH REAL HELP! Will review more when were through right now were on the 3rd exersice, the first didn't do to well not for him but worked great with my kids. I't gives you a color chart to attach emotions to , Like for me white means Im open to conversation or questions. brown means I have alot on my mind I can't pay attention right now. Since Aspies have a hard time reading body language this really help intrupting me when im busy and so on. Great book! real help!

Disappointed

We didn't find this book particularly helpful to us. I have to assume it was designed for people with more severe Asperger's than what we are dealing with. We felt much of the book was patronizing, and few of the skills provided in the book were really helpful to us. I am sure some couples could really benefit from this, but I feel like we needed something geared towards a much higher functioning couple.

If you have the slightest interest in London or the Fire Services around the world, then you must have this book in your library. It is a superb accounting of events, happenings, tragedies and euphoria from the point of view of 1 Officer through his lifes work of loving his job and the people he worked with and those in the communities that he served.

Dave has done a wonderful job with his story-telling abilities and I am really transported back to those times when I served with him in the B Division and its characters. Might ask the wife to pop this book into my box when I go so that I can enjoy it some more.

Beautiful David, well done, a triumph and a great read.!!!!

I highly recommend

This book has been my guide of practicing Reiki in last 6 years. This book addresses very basic questions of how to practice Reiki and dives you deep into how it can heal various emotions and health issues. I received this book from my Reiki Master Ashwita, 6 years back and since then this has been my guide for healing myself and people around me. There are many ways of following Reiki and I am not sure what is right and what is not but one thing I know with my personal experience is that methods written in this book WORKS and works so powerfully that I and people whom I heal can feel the energy. Hailing from India and living in the USA, I know there is something magical about India which attracts many spiritual seekers from around the world. But there are very very few real GURUs who can answer those queries and have the ability to really guide. I haven't got an opportunity to meet the author of this book but Ashwita, my Reiki master and who referred me this book is one of those very few shining stars in India who can really guide in the right path and has that holistic knowledge about spiritualism.

A book you will enjoy if you like to learn about Reality Based Self-Defense

The Ultimate Guide to Reality Based Self-Defense is a very good book to start with for those interested in the area of real and effective self-defense techniques and tactics. You will not learn everything from this book, but it is a good start, and full of good information on what reality based self-defense is all about. Forget traditional martial arts, they are not very effective when survival stress is involved. In the heat and flurry of a life or death confrontation gross motor skills are best, and you don't have the time to decide on a particular technique out of a syllabus of scores of possible responses. This book teaches rightly that less is more when it comes to a real fight in the street and not some sanctioned sporting match.

An excellent basic guide for anyone interested in Reality-Based Combative Systems.

If you are seeking an overview of what reality-based combative systems have to offer you, you will love this text. This book was organized by the editors of Black Belt Magazine, who put together in one text the various articles written by experts in the field of reality based combat systems. The 127 pages cover a lot of practical material on real life self-defense and self-offense techniques.

Some of the sections include the 10 commandments of reality-based fighting by Richard Ryan, developing your observation skills by Sammy Franco, competition vs., destruction by Tim Larkin, an overview of Tony Blauer's SPEAR system, ground survival techniques by Jim Wagner, a two part interview with the legendary Kelly McCann on combat in the real world, the criminal mind by Ernest Emerson, several sections on how to defend against knives and guns taken from the Krav Maga and Haganah systems, as well as a two part edged weapon section dealing with the use and defenses for knife attacks by Michael Janich.

In conclusion, if you are interested in practical and realistic self-defense training, you will want a copy of this very informative text.

Christmas gift for son-in-law

My daughter and her husband each have an Amazon wish list and regularly update them. I use the lists to buy their Christmas gifts. After giving him this book, I learned that his grandmother and mother are now also using the Amazon wish lists. They gave him the same book but he was happy to have two - one for home and one to use in his self defense class for the elderly. Good basic book for self-defense.
