Worth reading for serious Matlab users

This is a very clearly organized and written book. Serious Matlab users will have already formed opinions and developed 'styles' on many of the topics covered, but the author's suggestions and the underlying reasoning are worth considering nevertheless. I found myself agreeing with about 80% of his material and at least half of the remainder was at least worth considering. An example: the author recommends arranging code flow (including 'continues', 'breaks', and 'returns' in functions so that there is only a single exit point for the entire function. While I partially disagree (if the input is bad, I see no reason not to incorporate an immediate 'return'; the alternative is bound to involve setting and checking an otherwise unneeded flag), at least considering this principle has made for - I think - better flow in the functions I've written subsequently. And the discussion of Matlab's 'publish' feature, and coding for it, has opened my eyes and those of a co-worker to a whole new way of producing report-quality output automatically. As I write this, I actually make my living writing Matlab code, but I think even for beginners in the language the sample code snippets will make worthwhile parsing.

You'll learn some new tricks

I work for a large lab that will base its coding style on "The Elements of Matlab Style." Reading the book was mandatory, and somewhat to my surprise, quite worthwhile.

I've used Matlab for over a decade, so I was relieved to find that I was not totally off -- recommendations for variable naming and so on were mostly compatible with conventions I'd already developed on my own. In addition, there was much good performance advice that matched lessons I learned the hard way, through months of writing sub-optimal beginner's code.

But you can always learn something new. For example, I had not given any thought to commenting for integration with Matlab's documentation system. Nor had I come up with the idea of replacing switch statements with more elegant and maintainable cell string matching. As far as I knew, loops were still slower than vectorization (I'll have to look into this more). And, even though I've shared a lot of code, I was unaware that an easily portable toolbox setup is not that hard to implement.

In sum, I learned a few new tricks. If you're new to Matlab, you'll probably learn a lot more.

This book is an excellent source for standard MATLAB styles. It is easy to use and serves as a great reference. Although I've been using MATLAB for several years, this book offered great suggestions for standard styles and the reasoning behind the style. I've adjusted my approach and practices much more than I thought I would.

�Chapter 4: Invent Options for Mutual Gain

The case of Israel and Egypt negotiating over who should keep how much of the Sinai Peninsula illustrates both a major problem in negotiation and a key opportunity.

Often you are negotiating along a single dimension, such as the amount of territory, the price of a car, the length of a lease on an apartment, or the size of a commission on a sale. At other times you face what appears to be an either/or choice that is either markedly favorable to you or to the other side. In a divorce settlement, who gets the house? Who gets custody of the children? You may see the choice as one between winning and losing- and neither side will agree to lose. Even if you do win and get the car for $12,000, the lease for five years, or the house and kids, you have a sinking feeling that they will not let you forget it. Whatever the situation, your choices seem limited.

Skill at inventing options is one of the most useful assets a negotiator can have.

Yet all too often negotiators end up like the proverbial children who quarreled over an orange. After they finally agreed to divide the orange in half, the first child took one half, ate the fruit, and threw away the peel, while the other threw away. the fruit and used the peel from the second half in baking a cake. All too often negotiators "leave money on the table" - they fail to reach agreement when they might have, or the agreement they do reach could have been better for each side. Too many negotiations end up with half an orange for each side instead of the whole fruit for one and the whole peel for the other. Why?

DIAGNOSIS

As valuable as it is to have many options, people involved in a negotiation rarely sense a need for them. In a dispute, people usually believe that they know the right answer - their view should prevail. In a contract negotiation they are equally likely to believe that their offer is reasonable and should be adopted, perhaps with some adjustment in the price. All available answers appear to lie along a straight line between their position and yours. Often the only creative thinking shown is to suggest splitting the difference.

Premature judgment

Inventing options does not come naturally. Not inventing is the normal state of affairs, even when you are outside a stressful negotiation. If you were asked to name the one person in the world most deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize, any answer you might start to propose would immediately encounter your reservations and doubts. How could you be sure that that person was the most deserving? Your mind might well go blank, or you might throw out a few answers that would reflect conventional thinking: "Well, maybe the Pope, or the President."

In a tense situation like this you are not likely to start inventing imaginative solutions. You may fear that if you suggest some bright half-baked idea like taking half the increase in a raise and half in additional benefits, you might look foolish. Your boss might say, "Be serious. You know better than that. It would upset company policy. I am surprised. that you even suggested it." If on the spur of the moment you invent a possible option of spreading out the raise over time, he may take it as an offer: "I'm prepared to start negotiating on that basis." Since he may take whatever you say as a commitment, you will think twice before saying anything.

Searching for the single answer

In most people's minds, inventing simply is not part of the negotiating process. People see their job as narrowing the gap between positions, not broadening the options available. They tend to think, "We're having a hard enough time agreeing as it is. The last thing we need is a bunch of different ideas." Since the end product of negotiation is a single decision, they fear that freefloating discussion will only delay and confuse the process.

the second is premature closure. By looking from the outset for the single best answer, you are likely to short-circuit a wiser decision-making process in which you select from a large number of possible answers.

The assumption of a fixed pie

A third explanation for why there may be so few good options on the table is that each side sees the situation as essentially either/or - either I get what is in dispute or you do. A negotiation often appears to be a "fixed-sum" game; $100 more for you on the price of a car means $100 less for me. Why bother to invent if all the options are obvious and I can satisfy you only at my own expense?

Thinking that "solving their problem Is their problem"

A final obstacle to inventing realistic options lies in each side's concern with only its own immediate interests. For a negotiator to reach an agreement that meets his own self-interest he needs to develop a solution which also appeals to the self-interest of the other. Yet emotional involvement on one side of an issue makes it difficult to achieve the detachment necessary to think up wise ways of meeting the interests of both sides: "We've got enough problems of our own; they can look after theirs." There also frequently exists a psychological reluctance to accord any legitimacy to the views of the other side; it seems disloyal to think up ways to satisfy them. Shortsighted self- concern thus leads a negotiator to develop only partisan positions, partisan arguments, and one-sided solutions....

Great Information, Could Use Better Layout

The title of Fisher and Ury's book is Getting to Yes - Negotiating Agreement without Giving In. It's a case where the title clearly lays out what the book is about. In Getting to Yes the authors present, step by step, how to find your way to a win-win solution that helps meet your goals while at the same time preserving the relationship so that future negotiations also go smoothly.

This book was the assigned textbook for a college course I took on negotiation, but it's one of those fairly rare cases where the material that's useful for a college course is also immensely useful for off-the-street people in a variety of situations. This book avoids complicated jargon and long, droning background chapters. Instead, it plunges into helpful information to assist people in negotiating for a new car, negotiating issues with their landlords, and all the many ways we all negotiate for our position throughout life.

Negotiation isn't just for union leaders trying to avert a strike. All of us negotiate each day as we try to juggle our many roles. We negotiate with our co-workers over assignments. We negotiate with our family members over chores. In an ideal world all of those discussions would go quickly, smoothly, and with as little strife as possible.

Getting to Yes provided numerous helpful examples which made their points more easy to understand. It is so true that people tend to remember stories where they might not remember dry text. When I think about this book I do remember several of the stories clearly, and those help to represent the points the authors were making. The stories help remind me to focus on the issues when negotiating and to look for objective standards to work with.

The information presented is wonderful, and immediately useful in life.

On the down side, this is a new version of older material. The authors chose to keep the initial book in its original form and then add on additional information at the end. I appreciate for historical reasons why they wanted to do that. However, from a fresh reader point of view, I feel they should present an integrated whole which most clearly presents the full information. The way the book is laid out currently, you have to go back and forth to find all information on a given topic.

Also, the format is not laid out for easy reference. If they went more for a "dummies" style with an easy to scan layout, graphs and charts to quickly find and scan, and quick end-summaries, that would make this more useful as a reference book to keep on a shelf. Right now if I had an issue to handle it would be less than quick to grab the book and find the answer. I would have to wade through the book to figure out where to get the support I needed.

Still, I do recommend that everyone read this book at least once, to build their skills in negotiation. It's something we all have to do!

VERY BASIC INTRO TO NEGOTIATING

This is the first book I ever read on negotiating, and at the time I found it extremely good. However, since then, I have read both Shell's "Bargaining for Advantage" and Cialdini's "Influence", and found those two books immensely better than Getting to Yes, for a few different reasons.
Number of stories - in Getting to Yes, the authors do not offer enough stories to burn the concepts into the reader's mind. I personally think stories are the best way to communicate something like negotiating.
Actual psychological concepts explained - Getting to Yes is a summary of findings, and it never explains why certain things work. Without a deep understanding, it is not clear when the concepts work and when they don't. Especially in Influence, you really get to understand how to persuade someone by remembering the core psych concepts.
If you are just looking for a quick intro to negotiating, this is a decent book. If you would like to actually understand people and how to influence them, this is too basic.

Critical & Fundamental Book on Negotiation

The book, GETTING TO YES, by Roger Fisher and William Ury is perhaps the most important book on negotiation I have ever read. I have personally benefitted from this book simply because I am even more aware of the importance of preparation and identifying shared interests and taking advantage of them. Respect, always respect, the other person's interests. More importantly, know them well.

Highlights:
The book is on principled negotiation, which is essentially negotiation on merits. The aim is to reach a wise agreement, defined as meeting the legitimate interests of all parties to the extent possible, resolving conflicting interests fairly, and ensuring the agreement is durable and takes community interests in account.

The factors of principled negotiation include:

PEOPLE: separting people from the issues/problems.
INTERESTS: focus on them, particularly mutual interests, and not on "positions." E.g., the expression of "you are in no position to negotiation" is absolutely absurd. One, it is an assumption unless the person stating that carefully prepared. Two, it can generally only hurt the person stating that, generating hostility and conflict. A principled negotiator probes interests, raises questions. The question, then, is "what are your interests in this deal?" and "Why do you suppose that is a fair proposal?"
PLANNING: a skilled negotiator will gather, organize, and weigh all information carefully relating to a negotiation. If there is one concept I could share with you, it is "prepare."
CRITERIA: prior to reaching an agreement, the parties should agree to using objective criteria to measure an agreement; these include market value, precedent, and so forth.
OPTIONS: generate a variety of options to reach an agreement. Envision what a successful outcome would be from the negotiation prior to negotiation, then generate several possibilities of satisfying everyone's interests to obtain the goal.

Specific Questions I had that were answered:
a) When personally attacked, what to do?
Control yourself, let the other side vent, then remain silent. Do not embarrass them, do not attack back.

b) More on this concept of "interests?"
First, find shared interests. Two, acknolwedge the other side's interests as a part of the whole system of negotiation. Share what your interests are pointedly, then provide your reasoning for reaching your proposal.

c) If the other side is way more powerful?
One must know her/his BATNA well. It is your Best Alternative to Negotiated Agreement (I think that is the correct acroynm). The better your BATNA is, the more power you have. If you have a very bad BATNA, you must realize that "how" you negotiate is extremely important. Your BATNA should be your measure against any proposal made by the other side. If your BATNA is better, then you obviously reject the proposal.

d) What if the other side is choleric, tricky, and applies pressures to force me into agreement?
You should first recognize the tactics being used. "Oh, this is the old good and bad cop routine." Then, expose it. Say, "excuse me, unless I am mistaken, you two are playing good cop and bad cop with me. Now, let's just focus on interests and reach a mutually satisfying agreement." If they put sun in your eyes, request to move. If your enviroment is hostile or discomforting, you have a right to request a change in setting. Most importantly, recognize them... do not be phased by them.

e) I am powerful, they are weak. How should/can I exploit them?
Resources do not make you a powerful negotiator. All the king's soldiers and all the king's men cannot make you a powerful negotiator, particularly if your socalled "power" will not impact the other side. It is best to focus on mutual interests and attempt to reach an agreement to satisfying them. Threating a person, mentioning your power will most-likely undermine your ability to reach agreement.

In conclusion, this book can be a benefit for all people. Why? It shows you how to take into account other people's interests to satisfy your own. It is crucial for individuals to terminate the concept that to "win" in negotiations is to take advantage of other people. To succeed in negotiation, it is not about exploiting people but getting what you want. Essentially, satisfying your interests; this book can show you how.

Very Comprehensive - Everything You Need to Know About Mezcal

As a bar owner that serves exclusively mezcal and agave spirits this has been a necessary handbook for all of our bartenders and front of house staff. Very comprehensive. This book is a must for mezcal lovers or any new to mezcal and curious about this magical spirit. John's writing style is casual but informative and he'll crack you up, guaranteed. The book covers all facets of the mezcal world, including a detailed description of the production process, agave varietals, and most importantly- the future of mezcal. If you read this book and you're a tequila devotee (like John said he once was) I see a conversion in your immediate future. Oh and I almost forgot- there are tons of delicious mezcal cocktail recipes in the back---donated by famous bars/bartenders plus some crafted by John himself! Amazing!

“Holy Smoke! It’s Mezcal!: A Complete Guide from Agave to Zapotec” is a wonderful dissertation on the production and consumption of Mezcal, a Mexican spirit which has become increasingly popular in the U.S. John McEvoy, the blogger of “Mezcal PhD,” offers an interesting and informative introduction to Mezcal, one leavened with history, humor, and insight, In addition, he provides mini-reviews of imported brands and includes over forty cocktail recipes. I once believed mezcal was a cheap, oily, low-life agave derivative “con gusano,” when compared to its “refined” and more popular cousin, tequila. But McEvoy convinces me otherwise and, with his guidance, I now embark on a new adventure: the sampling of Mexico’s other popular native spirit, Mezcal.

Why You Should Read This Book - and Drink Mezcal!

Well, I must say this is a wonderfully informative and entertaining book. Having been to Oaxaca and seen first-hand where many of these seductive brands are born, raised and produced - I believe the author has perfectly captured the essence of what mezcal is all about. It is everything that tequila is not - and more - because its soul is as free as Mother Nature can make it. John has managed to take the reader through the history of mezcal on a personal tour of the senses that does not stop in Oaxaca. It continues on to your local bar or mezcalaría and into your living room. The list of cocktails is amazing - if not dangerous (YUM)! Buy this book and you will know almost everything you need to know about mezcal. The only thing left to do - is drink it. Salud!

Chinese Link is by far the best structured and sequenced textbook I have ever seen with a scope covering all necessary structural and communicative elements for elementary Chinese.

 

I am a strong supporter for this practice to combine pinyin with characters in first year textbook since it will give learners immediate hints about the pronunciation of characters which are totally foreign to English speaking Chinese learners.

 

The video for ‘Language in Use’ is great!  The video presentations impressed me greatly in that with its authentic settings and naturally occurring communicative activities, they will not only help learners outside class but also in class.

About the Author

Sue-mei Wu, Ph.D., Associate Teaching Professor of Chinese Studies in the Modern Languages Department at Carnegie Mellon University. She is the project leader and primary author for the Chinese Link textbook project (Beginning and Intermediate levels). She received her Ph.D. in linguistics, with a minor in language pedagogy, from the Ohio State University. She has taught at Ohio State University, Harvard University and Carnegie Mellon University. She has devoted her linguistic, pedagogy and technology expertise to creating and developing various innovative new Chinese courses, textbooks, online courses and web pages. She has designed, developed and coordinated all levels of Chinese languages and culture courses and received several awards to support developing online language, culture and folk performance modules. She is the chair of the Chinese LearnLab of the Pittsburgh Science of Learning Center (PSLC, funded by NSF, http://learnlab.org), and the PI of various online Chinese language and culture projects. She is the project leader and coordinator of the Chinese Online project funded by NSF. She is the co-author of Classical Chinese Primer (Hong Kong: The Chinese University Press) and the co-author of a new textbook for heritage learners.

 

Yueming Yu, PhD., Teaching Professor and Coordinator of the Chinese Studies Program of the Department of Modern Languages at Carnegie Mellon University and co-author of the Chinese Link textbook project. She came to CMU in 1992 to start the Chinese Program at the Department of Modern Languages and has been the Coordinator of the program ever since. She has more than 40 years of experience in teaching a foreign language. She has taught various levels of Chinese courses and in recent years has focused on the content courses at the advanced level of Chinese. Before she came to the US, she was an Associate Professor of English as well as the coordinator of the International Journalism Program at the Shanghai International Studies University. She was also one of the founding members of the English newspaper (Students Weekly) in Shanghai and a pioneer for the English News Program of Radio Shanghai. She has translated several books from English to Chinese, and compiled English-Chinese dictionaries. Her doctoral dissertation was a research on the criteria used in the selection of textbooks for teaching Chinese in the United States. Her current research focuses on pedagogical issues in Chinese language education with an emphasis on the relationship between teaching language and teaching culture, including a special focus on the teaching of heritage students. She is also the project leader of another textbook of Chinese for heritage students and published a series of Chinese textbooks for online use by high school students.

 

Yanhui Zhang, PhD., is Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics at Chinese University of Hong Kong.  She received her PhD. in Second Language Acquisition at Carnegie Mellon University.  Her research focuses on the fluency and robustness of second language basic skills learning, cross-language transfer, computer-assisted language learning, and bilingual education.

 

Weizhong Tian, obtained her Bachelor of Art degree in English Language and Literature from Peking University, one of the most prestigious universities in mainland China. She has been an Instructor of Chinese in the Modern Languages Department at Carnegie Mellon University. Before coming to the U.S., she taught various levels of English as well as English for Business at a university in China.

I found it to be very helpful and easy to power through

PURPOSE: I bought this book for my Beginner's Chinese class. We finished all 11 chapters in one semester.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: I found it to be very helpful and easy to power through.

CONS:
>In each chapter, there is a set of main vocab as well as supplementary vocab. I found that some supplementary vocab from the earlier chapters were repeated in the later chapters as the main set of vocab.
>At the back of the book is a chinese->english dictionary and vice versa. However, I feel that the dictionary could be more extensive as they were missing some vocabulary that was used in the book.

PROS:
>You learn a lot of Chinese surnames in this textbook.
>A lot of helpful conversations are littered throughout the book.
>There are also a few chapter reviews.
> At the end of each chapter, there are sections about Chinese culture.
>Prior to chapter one, there is a brief section on pinyin.

Effective textbook

I needed this textbook for my Chinese class. I feel that the textbook is really awesome and when paired up with the student activities manual and the character book it really works. I like the passages in the textbook and the fact that there are traditional and simplified characters in the beginning when it is introducing the new characters to the readers. By doing this, people that write in simplified and traditional at least can recognize the other way of writing the character - simplified or traditional. I like this textbook a lot more than some of my other Chinese textbooks that I have had previously.

Using a comprehensive evaluation of recent archaeological findings, Avni addresses the transformation of local societies in Palestine and Jordan between the sixth and eleventh centuries AD. Arguing that these archaeological findings provide a reliable, though complex, picture, Avni illustrates how the Byzantine-Islamic transition was a much slower and gradual process than previously thought, and that it involved regional variability, different types of populations, and diverse settlement patterns.

Based on the results of hundreds of excavations, including Avni's own surveys and excavations in the Negev, Beth Guvrin, Jerusalem, and Ramla, the volume reconstructs patterns of continuity and change in settlements during this turbulent period, evaluating the process of change in a dynamic multicultural society and showing that the coming of Islam had no direct effect on settlement patterns and material culture of the local population. The change in settlement, stemming from internal processes rather than from external political powers, culminated gradually during the Early Islamic period. However, the process of Islamization was slow, and by the eve of the Crusader period Christianity still had an overwhelming majority in Palestine and Jordan.

About the Author

Gideon Avni is the Head of the Archaeological Division in the Israel Antiquities Authority and a lecturer at the Institute of Archaeology at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. His academic interests focus on various aspects of Classical, Late Antique and Early Islamic archaeology, the cultural and religious transformation of the Near East from Byzantine to Islamic rule, and the archaeology of desert societies in the Levant. He has conducted extensive fieldwork in the Negev Desert, Beth Guvrin, Jerusalem, and Ramla.

Along with many others of the depression era Franlin Hall grew up in rural poverty and was deeply religious. Initially he was with the Methodist church but their stance against healing forced him elsewhere. During the depression and World War II he travelled as an independent evangelist. In 1946, he published a brief book entitled "Atomic Power with God through Prayer and Fasting." The book, which provided detailed information on the methods and benefits of fasting, was an immediate success and brought Hall considerable fame. According to Hall, all of the major evangelists began following his fasting regime and miracles erupted everywhere. Many observers of the early revival years agreed, as one said, "Every one of these men down through the years followed Franklin Hall's method of fasting."

fasting is the way to release the power of Jesus.

We live in a day when it is absolutely necessary for every believer to function in supernatural power. Everyone of us! Fasting is the only way to come into that. This book is anointed. I started reading it and started a 10 day fast which I am on day 8 now. I feel clearer, more sensitive to the Lord and my faith uncapped! One knows they should fast but I just couldn't muster the willpower or gumption. But this book imparted to me an empowering grace to do this extended fast. I've had phenomenal grace. Get this book if you want to go deeper.

Atomic Power With God Through Fasting and Prayer is a great read for every Christian who seems to keep "going around the mountain." If you want breakthrough, want to draw closer to God, fasting is the key. This book has scripture, advice, and testimonies of what fasting can do for you, spiritually and naturally.

Easy to read

Easy to read. At first it seems like it might bore you, but I haven't been able to put it down. Very informative and helpful read, especially if your entering an extended fast and having trouble sticking to it. If that's the case get the prayer that moves mountains book to go along with it and you will see victory. I love this book. It's down to earth, old but exceptional, VERY informative, and is, at least in my fasting journey, a must have, must read book. Great purchase!
