About the Author
Thomas Szirtes is a professional engineer who devotes his career to consulting, writing, and teaching. He is a former Senior Staff Engineer at SPAR Aerospace, Ltd. in Toronto, and was one of the project engineers of the Shuttle Robotic Manipulator Arm (CANADARM) project, for which he received NASA's Achievement Award. Dr. Szirtes has published over 60 scientific and engineering papers, as well as a college text on mathematical logic. He taught at the Technical University of Budapest, McGill University, and Loyola College in Montreal, and was a founding editor of the SPAR Journal of Engineering and Technology.

Something every technical profeesional should have

An incredibly easy book to read. I found I could go from section to section and extract the knowledge that needed at that time. Sometimes I just pick it up and open it at random and I often get something new out of it. After being exposed to this book you can see how dimensional analysis is something that most of us should be capable of applying to those problems that lend themselves to no other approach. The only reason I gave it 4 and not 5 was because I would have liked to see more financial examples and I don't think amperes should be considered a fundamental unit. One of the best technical books I have bought.

Since the launch of the first spacecraft in 1957, space technology has transformed our daily lives by introducing innovations such as worldwide telecommunications, broadcasting, weather forecasting and navigation. Recent years have seen a revival in the field of space systems engineering and astronautics due to increased reliance on space infrastructure to provide communications and navigation services, not to mention ongoing endeavours in human and robotic space exploration.
Ulrich Walter, a former astronaut and expert on space, presents in this textbook a thorough introduction to the physical principles underlying spaceflight and space exploration. Starting with the fundamentals of rocket propulsion and rocket trajectories, the author continues with a discussion of orbital and interplanetary flight mechanics, followed by guidance and re-entry. Ulrich Walter provides an understanding and insight beyond the numeric solution of equations by developing an appreciation for fundamental concepts. Moreover, he is not reluctant to study the possibility of the occurrence of life in supposed multidimensional universes based on the stability analysis of planetary orbits nor to investigate relativistic space travel � la Star Trek from a mathematical perspective.
This text is based on extensive teaching experience and work with students at the Technical University, Munich, and includes selected chapter-end examples and problems. The reader will learn how to solve a given problem using a network of formulas and astronautic relationships presented in the book. About the Author
Ulrich Walter, born in Iserlohn, Germany, received his PhD in the field of solid state physics from the University of Cologne. After two post-doc positions at the Argonne National Laboratory, Chicago, Illinois, and the University of California at Berkley, California, he joined the German astronaut team and flew in 1993 on board the space shuttle Columbia on the STS-55 (Spacelab D-2) mission. From 1998 to 2003, he held various corporate positions at the IBM Research Center, Germany, and in 2003 accepted a professorship at the Institute of Astronautics, Technische Universit�t M�nchen, Germany. Professor Walter became known to a wider audience as presenter of MaxQ, a popular science show on German television, and is author of a number of popular science books on spaceflight and research.
Currently, the main focus of his scientific work is on satellite technology.

Rare Gem

This is probably the best text I've seen on introductory Astronautics. It is written by an author who truly understands the physics behind spaceflight. If you want to learn the key concepts, relationships and ideas behind spaceflight, this is the book to start with. It is also great for young students interested in space flight: for preparation you will need an education in mathematics up to AP or undergrad calculus. An introductory course in physics would be helpful. The author has a rare combination of advanced education and very specific, relevant experience. I've put this on a shelf with Goldstein's Classical Mechanics and Misner's Gravitation; a rare gem.

This book continues the great advice continuum started with his previous 2 books. I recommend !!

If you have already read "The Currency Wars" and "The Death of Money" by this author, then I am sure you will also appreciate this latest of Mr. Rickards books.
Mine is a hard cover with a paper cover that looks like the image for this listing.
James inserts some usually brief re-caps of material from his previous books in order to build on the latest developments on those themes, to bring the reader up to date. And there is plenty of new material.
Mr. Rickards advises that the US is currently at or near 0 inflation, and could ultimately teeter off into inflation (hoped for) with the soon anticipated QE4, or even with QE4 may teeter off into deflation (devastating to economy), and offers ways to protect your money or investments. Physical gold in your hand will protect you either way, inflation or deflation. If you,re into stocks and treasuries and other vehicles, you should "place a bet" on both sides, and then Mr. Rickards will be issuing news flashes when the break toward either inflation or deflation occurs so you can remove your bets on the losing side. So if you get your book via the Agora web site, which is what I did, you get your book free but pay for a subscription of Mr. Rickards Strategic Intelligence newsletter. The newsletter is worth what I paid, especially since it included the book, and there are some breaking news flashes with related investor advice included as they happen.

The book has 270 pages, not counting the index. The copyright is 2015.

Lot of shock, little useful advice

If you're a liberal, you can stop reading now.

Just as the leftists demanded that we judge Bill Clinton the person separately from Bill Clinton the president, you need to make a similar "separation" when (if) you read this book. There is some merit to the "substance", but you truly must hold your nose on the "style".

Based upon who the publisher is and the promos for the book, my opinion before I read this book was that there was a lot of "shock value" here in order to promote the newsletter, etc. This opinion hasn't changed after reading the book. Now, as far as the technical merit, Rickards has some interesting things to say and for everyone to heed. For instance, he is right that we have idiots running our government and they don't know what they are doing. He is right about the "government" being a monolith. He is right that they are using the wrong economic models. He is right that quantitative easing won't work and that structural changes are needed. Unfortunately, the structural changes that are needed are exactly the opposite of what the leftists in this country support -- after all it is about fairness, victim-hood, green weenie energy, and sticking it to the producers. So, what Richards has to say about all of this is worth the read. I recommend that aspect of it.

There are two irritating aspects of this book. 1) The subtitle is "How to Grow Your Wealth During the Coming Collapse". Other than Rickards repeatedly advising buy "gold, land, fine art, etc.", there is little useful advice on growing your wealth. Where is the best place to buy my gold? All land isn't equal in terms of investing; what should I buy? Are there fine art mutual funds that I could invest in? Specifics are lacking. More could have been provided if he was truly interested in helping the reader. 2) Rickards writing is just horrid. I've already stated that he repeatedly advises buy "gold, land, fine art, etc." In places his writing just doesn't make sense because the grammar and word selection are just so bad. Apparently, he doesn't proof read his work very well or is just too lazy to do ti. Rickards is old enough that he came thought high school at a time when one was actually taught how to construct a cogent sentence unlike the punks coming through the public school system today whom he could've hired to edit his manuscript.

A Must Have Resource ! Very Highly Recommended To Rebalance Portfolios!

The Big Drop by James Rickards is a helpful investment resource because he reviews the dynamics of a real global market slowdown in places like China, Brazil and elsewhere. In addition, he reviews alternative investments for your wealth like gold (preferably gold coins), land (don't forget the value of location) and fine art. Historically, high quality fine art has gone up quite consistently.

Jim explains the dynamics of a stock market unwinding and the role of the Federal Reserve in curbing inflation but allowing some in the range of (2% to 3.5% at the high). Some inflation actually benefits the government because the federal debt is paid down in cheaper dollars.

The ultimate portfolio protection in an iterative downward spiral consists of components like cash, gold, land, fine art, government bonds, alternative investments, energy stocks, transportation, agriculture and natural resources. There is some positioning in avant garde high tech and natural resources.Jim points to some of Warren Buffet's investments in railroads as evidence of price appreciation over time irregardless of short term dips in the economy.

Jim explains why investors need to be in cash. Investments in cash and near cash cushion against market drops which decimate portfolios. In addition, the maxim "Cash is king." is a fundamental law in retail businesses and elsewhere in the economy.In addition, cash takes the volatility out of portfolios and volatility has been on the rise since 2015 into the 1st quarter of 2016. The rise in volatility is evidenced by the increments in the VIX Index.

Jim presents good arguments as to why governments favor inflation. The advent of inflation can increase consumption, decrease the value of government debt, and increase tax collections. Governments fear deflation because people tend to save, government debt becomes more burdensome and tax collections go down.

The book presents a good argument that deflation is here but inflation will prevail over the longer term as it has in the past.The author presents a believable argument as to why the price of oil will stabilize at around the $60. value. The price of oil must be seen in terms of the bigger picture which includes America's exploration, the temporary slowdown in the world economy, technological breakthroughs in solar energy, dramatic auto fuel efficiencies, hybrid cars, solar home installations and a plethora of other considerations too numerous to list here.

Overall, Jim's book is a good technical resource which alerts investors to factors which could impact investment portfolios on an immediate basis. Investors have protected themselves in the past by repositioning their investment portfolios, using stop losses (although this technique is set to be restricted by the SEC), the use of conditional trading strategies and liquidating their positions to cash and safer investments. (until the dust settles)

Investors should remember that America's strength lies beyond merely balancing budgets or tinkering with interest rates. The US economy is bolstered by huge investment moats like 3D printing, Robotic Surgery, Solar Energy Breakthroughs, the strategic real estate value of where the US sits (sandwiched between two great oceans), a preferred climate, railroad infrastructure, oil/natural gas infrastructure, the university tech knowhow, driverless cars, interworld connectivity, the Patent Office and many other advantages too numerous to list here.

Great book about good and bad bosses

Bob Sutton's latest book is a great read, and is filled with vivid examples of leaders who do things right, or wrong. Sutton is a talented story teller, and brings bosses to life in his descriptions of real life executives and managers, and also draws on his deep knowledge of psychology to explain, in clear terms, why the actions of bosses are so impactful, for better or for worse, on the people who work for them. This book does what so few management and leadership books are able to- it balances "showing" through real world stories with "telling" through established theories of social psychology. Anyone who has a boss, or is a boss, will benefit from reading this book.

Good Boss Bad Boss is a great book on leadership.

I have read almost all of Professor Sutton's books and I find his ability to find real world examples of just about any leadership style or challenge amazing. This book is no exception. Sutton talks about the leadership theory, but balances it with his shrewd and pragmatic lens on the real world. Sutton calls it like he sees it-no apologies. I enjoy the mixture of theory and reality. Sutton sees leadership as a craft; something personal.

This book is filled with great real world examples of leadership in many styles. I found it thought provoking, as I was able to think about how any one of these styles might suit me or my organization.

Magnets and septic tanks

However defined, a "boss" by nature is given or somehow obtains at least some degree of control of and - yes - responsibility for others, for better or worse. Its connotations have become so diverse that the term's meaning is almost entirely determined by the person who invokes it. The inmates of a prison, for example, do not have the same meaning in mind when referring to a guard they fear as do fans of Bruce Springsteen when describing someone they revere. In the business world, however, everyone agrees that having a "good boss" is highly preferable to having a "bad boss." Now and for the first time insofar as I know, Robert Sutton has written a book in which all of the attention is devoted to a rigorous examination of these two types.

Having read and then reviewed most of Sutton's previous books, I was not surprised to find so much valuable material (i.e. information and especially counsel) in his latest book. He also includes contributions from a diverse group of people who share their own experiences, opinions and suggestions. They include Michael McCain ("A Recipe for an Effective Apology," Pages 64-65), Margie Mauldin (the "Tape Method" to manage anger, Pages 92-93), Matthew May (a "dirty trick" to demonstrate how an organizational hierarchy can enable bad decisions, Pages 131-132), Bonny Warner-Simi (how to support and protect direct-reports by improving their performance evaluation process, Pages 165-166), and Paul Levy (how to support and protect those whom Jody Heymann characterizes - in Profit at the Bottom of the Ladder: Creating Value by Investing in Your Workforce -- as "the least-advantaged employees," Pages 195-196).

These and other contributions supplement those that Sutton includes as he delivers what the book's subtitle promises: an explanation of how to be the best (or at least a much better) boss by learning from real-world bosses who lack character and/or competence. "I use the word `boss' rather than `leader,' `manager,' or `supervisor' (although all are bosses) because it implies an authority figure that has direct and frequent contact with subordinates - and who is responsible for personally directing and evaluating their work." This book focuses on the differences between the best and worst bosses "when performing essential chores like taking charge, making wise decisions, turning talk into action, and doing their dirty work (i.e. work that is unpleasant but necessary but illegal, immoral, or unethical).

Sutton duly acknowledges that many of the ideas in this book are shaped by two books he co-authored with Jeffrey Pfeffer, The Knowing-Doing Gap and, more recently, Hard Facts, Dangerous Half-Truths, and Total Nonsense. (Note: I highly recommend those as well as Pfeffer's latest book, Power: Why Some People Have It and Others Don't.) Readers will especially appreciate how Sutton presents his material. He makes skillful use of bold face, italics, brackets, and bullet points as well as sequences of separate but related ideas. For example:

"What the Best Bosses Do": Seven attributes (Pages 47-64)
"Tricks for Taking Charge": He identifies nine (Pages 68-70)
"The Attitude of Wisdom": Smart Bosses and Wise Bosses (Page 73)
"Participation Traps": He identifies and discusses three (Pages 88-91)
"Other Smart People's Tricks": He identifies nine (Pages 113-122)

As is also true in all of his previously published books and articles, Sutton identifies the "what" and explains the "why" of a good or bad business decision or initiative, then focuses most of his attention on how to do what must be done while avoiding (or repairing) the damage of what should not be done. Congratulations to Robert Sutton on a brilliant achievement. Bravo!
