About the Author

Simon Benninga is professor of finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and at Tel Aviv University. He is the author of numerous academic articles and three previous books. His books on financial modeling and valuation are now standards in the field of finance and have been translated into Japanese, Chinese, Polish, and Italian.

Great first book on Finance. Excel usage a major plus.

I read this book and practiced its contents in preparation for my MBA and I am glad I did. Finance requires understanding of many mathematical nuances and combining them all together to make sound business and investment decisions is inherently complicated. This book is almost 900 pages long and contains wealth of valuable finance knowledge applicable to almost all decisions involving money and time.

As the title states, this book is about Finance with Excel and only Excel (no instructions or examples using financial calculators). All the examples are explained with Excel spreadsheets and all the problems and solutions are also in Excel. The CD in this book contains all the necessary excel spreadsheets both for chapter examples and problems. I have found the provided Excel spreadsheets to be very good templates for performing financial analysis such as mortgage calculations. I advise to purchase this book ONLY with the CD unless you can download or obtain the contents of its CD elsewhere.

The last chapters are dedicated to Excel basics and I highly recommend the beginners of MS Excel to read the last chapters first.

After reading this knowledge and value rich book, you will obtain a healthy respect for the power of Finance and Excel and you will know how to use both to make sound financial and business decisions.

Some reviewers have said that some of the problems had wrong solutions. I have found no errors in either the problems or the solutions. There are some Financial concepts that are counterintuitive and a solution could seem wrong to others.

Excellent Finance Book!!

Not being a finance expert, but wanting to learn important basic finance concepts like Net Present Value, Future Value, Internal Rate of Return, etc. I bought this book because it combined this knowledge with Excel.

This is an excellent introductory book on the subject. The concepts are not easy to understand at first, but the author does an excellent job of explaining them.

The only reason I did not give it five stars is, as an earlier commenter remarked, there are a number of mistakes in the Exercise section at the end of the chapters. Not impossible to work through, but it does slow one down a little bit.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning the basics of important financial concepts.

Best finance book out there!

This book is perfect for learning finance in excel. There are no books out there that come close to this. The book goes over all the common finance topics and shows you how to solve those problems in excel. The book goes over step by step with the problems on how to solve them. The best part is the cd that comes along with the book. It shows you all the exercises in excel so you can check your work and see how the formulas work. I recommend this book to professors teaching finance and students who don't feel their current class is teaching them what they need. This book teaches you what you need in the real world. Professionals of all kind would find this book useful. A must buy especially for the low price. The book is huge! A steal!

About the Author
Raffi (n� Hakob Melik-Hakobian) was born in 1835 in Bayajuk, near Salmas, in northwestern Persia. He died in Tiflis in 1888. He was a prolific and popular writer who contributed to Krikor Ardzrouni s Tiflis-based liberal periodical, Mshak (Cultivator). Among his other principal works of fiction are Jalaleddin, Gharib Mshetsi (The exile from Moush), Khachagoghi Hishatakarane (The diary of a cross-stealer), Kaitzer (Sparks), Davit Bek, and Samuel.

Great stuff! An eclectic selection of pieces that easily function as daily sight-reading, or can be worked up for performance. Highly recommended for just about any skill level, not just for beginners. The Bridges series is a wonderfully comprehensive progression of repertoire and studies that builds both skill and confidence. I wish all classical guitar instructors would use these.

I recommend this eerie as it offers a structured collection of useful repertoire for students. Of course it has some tedious pieces nobody wants to see and it sometimes lacks the pieces one hopes for. One point of critique is that several original compositions have been published as such while, in fact, they have been heavily edited -no editor's credits given.

She is also a Research Affiliate in the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology, Yale University. Her background in medical, scientific, environmental and other areas provides her with an appreciation of the interconnectedness of many subjects.

Great Resource

This book is an excellent compilation of papers by authoritative authors on crucial environmental issues today. As the author of one chapter, I may be a bit biased, but I can say without equivocation that the authors of the other chapters have written excellent summaries of the environmental issues they address. Janine Selendy, editor of this volume, has done a masterful job of planning this volume and putting it together. Congratulations to her on a job well-done. This is a valuable book for anyone wishing to obtain an overview of today's environmental issues.

I first heard Dave Carder at the Moody Bible Institute's pastor's conference in 2000. After attending his workshop about counseling situations involving marital infidelity, I returned home and immediately ordered his book. I was not disappointed.
Torn Asunder was written for those somehow connected to marital affairs, including prodigal spouses, their mates, pastors, counselors, or concerned friends. It is easy to understand, thoroughly evangelical in conviction, and based on the author's practical counseling experience and keen observation. It offers clear direction and principals upon which to build.
The book is divided into three main sections. The first division, "Understanding Extramarital Affairs" contains five chapters which distinguish types of affairs, causes, and factors that contribute toward improper relationships. The second subdivision boasts six chapters and is titled, "Healing from Affairs." The last three chapters tie up a few miscellaneous loose ends and are sectioned off as , "Special Circumstances."
The author writes clearly, simply, and informatively. He provides only a few necessary statistics (e.g., 50 to 65% of husbands and 45-55% of wives have had extra-marital affairs by the age of 40) as well as some surprising insights: "Young wives today are actually having affairs at a faster rate than same-aged men..."
Some of Carder's material is questionable. For example, the author describes the types of personalities that are more affair-prone than others without backing up his claims through documented studies. Most of what he says in this volume, however, does ring true to reality.
Carder offers a lot of meaty information. A few helpful statements include: "In sporadic, longer-lasting affairs, the spouse will need about two years to recover..." and, "The only lasting remedy is for the infidel to feel the agony he has caused the spouse." He does not minimize the pain and anger involved in these traumatic situations.
Carder views infidelity as not just indicative of a troubled individual, but rather indicative of a troubled marriage relationship involving both partners. He writes, "The goal for both to figure out is: what emotional and physical nurturance did the infidel receive from the affair that was unavailable in the marriage?"
I recommend this book to those struggling with recovery from infidelity, pastors, counselors, people-helpers, or anyone interested in a Christian perspective as to the causes, prevention, and recovery of marital affairs. It is thorough, sensitive, clear, balanced, and faithful to the Scriptures.

Good book, But.....

This is one of the better books I've read lately. It has helped me deal with the anger I felt over what happened.

But I did have issue with a couple of points in the book.

The book is written with the husband as the infidel. I know its difficult to write such a book and remain gender neutral, but this point mad the book harder for me to read and conncet with. Men and women are different in what they need and desire. The way the book is written it appears to not explore why women have affairs. Granted an affair is an affair but the underlying causes are different for men than they are for women.

This book says that the faithful spouse must take partial responsibility for the affair if healing is to take place. This is out and out bull. The faithful spouse may have contributed to the conditions in the marriage that lead up to the affair and needs to take responsibilty for that, but the infidel CHOSE to have the affair. No matter how bad the marriage is its no excuse for an affair. An affair is strictly a choice by the infidel and no one else is responsible for those actions.

This book says that the best way to assure that there is never another affair is to show your wayward spouse the pain they have caused you. Supposedly remembering the pain they caused the faithful spouse will keep them from straying again. I would want my wandering spouse to not have another affair because they love me not because they would inflict pain on me.

Other than it was a great book and anyone recovering from infidelity in their marriage needs to read this one.
