Amanda, Haylee’s best friend, has just learned that she is pregnant and she and Chris are getting married. Haylee’s parents buy her a condo as a gift and she moves in with Declan. Not too long after, Haylee and Declan get married.

Their lives are going perfect, they have a young baby boy and nothing could be better. Haylee has started a new job and Declan is doing well with law enforcement. She was just waiting for the shoe to drop. Declan dies suddenly of a heart problem and her world collapses. Her son becomes ill and she loses her job. Amanda steps in and makes her go to an interview, where she runs it with a part of her past she never thought she would encounter again.

Second time around

Most of the story is about Hayle finding love with an Irishman. Then he has massive heart failure and she is left alone. She meets Nick the nerd and he is still upset about her treatment of him in high school. They overcome this when they finally talk and a romance develops. Hayle grows up and learns what love really is. A good romantic story but needing editing. All three books need to be read together as the first was cut off from the story.

My rating was good because this book told a modern day story with just the right amount of the things I look for in a book. Feel good characters, compassion, a somewhat realistic story and it made me feel good after reading the book.

The trust that Thorpe had in others and his own perseverance show both his personal weaknesses and strengths. Casting the narrative into the first person but sticking closely to documentary sources for people, incidents, and even dialogue, he details Thorpe's stellar amateur career in track, baseball, football, and the Olympics, along with the young athlete's repeated run-ins with hostile (and sometimes corrupt) officials and the harsh conditions he and his classmates endured at several Indian schools. In addition, as Thorpe played football for Carlyle's brilliant coach "Pop" Warner, readers will find fascinating glimpses of the game in its formative years. Relating his feats in matter-of-fact, never boastful tones, Thorpe demonstrates a peaceable, team-minded spirit, a solid work ethic (a persistent reputation to the contrary notwithstanding), and an occasional stubborn streak, but never a trace of bitterness or anger. As in many other, more conventional biographies, he comes across as both a hero and an unexcelled role model. Great Book!

This book is written at a junior high level, but the topic and writing are captivating for adults to read as well as kids at the junior high level. Unlike other books about Jim Thorpe, this book takes the reader on a journey through what every day life could have been like for Jim Thorpe from childhood through his early adulthood. Jim Thorpe is a great role model for everyone, and this book is a great introduction to his life.

Based on phone reviews from my grandson & his mom, this is a great read, packed with credible history of growing-up-Oklahoma in Indian Country, forced into Boarding School horrors off reservation -- and habitually running away.
Jim Thorpe, however, ultimately turned into what many consider the best athlete of his day - perhaps even the last century. "Very well written", says my daughter, who picks it up after her son falls asleep to polish off another chapter.

With this book, Burke Davis provides an excellent piece of work that documents the important and oft-forgotten contributions of black Americans who fought during the American Revolution. While most history books focus on white heroes such as George Washington, Paul Revere, and Ethan Allen, this book focuses on the black Americans who fought bravely and heroically for freedom and independence in the American Revolution.

When the Revolution started, the American colonies had a population of about two and a half million people, one fifth of whom were black, mostly slaves. The courage and bravery demonstrated by blacks during the Revolution influenced legal decisions in the northern states to abolish slavery, leading to freedom for about 60,000 slaves. Yet for the most part, acts of heroism and the contributions of blacks during the Revolution either went unrecorded or were not widely publicized.

Examples of the men described in this valuable book are William Lee, who worked closely with George Washington through most of the Revolution and became one of the general's closest companions, and James Forten, a patriot who worked aboard an American privateer to prey on British shipping and who later, as an inventor and manufacturer, became one of the wealthiest men in Philadelphia. While Davis focuses on the deeds of black men, he does give a brief nod to the important role of black women during the Revolution, including Phyllis Wheatley, a poet with sharp words on religious, moral, and political issues.

Burke Davis has created an informative and well-research historical account using available resources from historical societies, museums, university special collections, foundations, the Library of Congress, the National Archives, newspaper articles, and various published books. This book will make a useful addition to any non-fiction collection that provides young students with a complete and racially-balanced account of the American Revolution.

I was hoping to find an unbiased, factual account of black heroes during the American Revolution for our homeschool curriculum, but this book carries a very negative, rather than matter-of-fact, tone that paints all white historians in a negative light. I ordered this book to help my 8th Grade students learn about little known American Revolutionary War heroes. It was very helpful and much more reliable than some internet sites.
